A Comparative Analysis
Two Women. Isolated versus Surrounded. What's the difference?
Before taking interviews into consideration, I wanted to observe the differences between the behavior and lifestyle of the elderly in a socially active versus isolated environment. A key example from within my own life came from two elderly folks I know from within my own community. One resides in Bangladesh, occasionally visiting the US, family ties extending across countries. The other lives as a neighbor to my own family, living alone.
Both women are of around the same age, ethnicity, and religion. Same base traits, yet such different environments that talking to them separately opens doors to such a wide array of views on different situations.
Maya, a Sweet Grandmother who Adores Crocheting
Whether it was Dhaka, Bangladesh, or in the USA, Maya was always surrounded by her family. With 5 kids, 3 residing in Bangladesh, 1 in Australia, and 1 in the USA, she was always on the move to shower each of her kids and grandkids with equal love and attention. Every half a year or so, she’d travel between the US and Bangladesh.
She tells me stories of the open love and content she feels with the environment she’s in, marveling at the peaceful life she’s given at the homes of her kids. Maya had a rough upbringing from her childhood, struck by poverty, but always used to a strong family supporting her throughout her journey. Now, at an old age, her children are, as she says, determined to make sure she doesn't lift a finger, urging her to just enjoy life. She spends her days crocheting, watching dramas, and gardening.
